    .: Story 1: Gate :.
"What--" Her eyes grew wide; I tensed in response and turned expectantly, following her gaze to find nothing out of the ordinary. Glancing back, I watched her brow furrow and her hands slowly clench into fists as she drew a sharp breath.

"What is it?" I urged softly, reaching out as far as I could around us but sensing nothing. Briefly grateful that I'd left Hikage and Makoto at home this time, I tried to divide my attention between her and the surroundings, convinced that a threat must be nearby, but immediately tuning out all else when a light began to glow in front of her, directly over her Crest dangling from the end of its chain.

"The gate--" Her words were again cut short as she winced in obvious pain or exertion, and the light grew brighter. No longer steady, it began to fracture and drift in small pieces, expanding all the time.

Alarms were going off in my mind; whatever this was, it was either hurting her or drawing off her energy, the energy that was our only source of protection from the recent strange occurences that had been coming more frequently. White light flooded out everything more than ten feet away, and though there was nothing I could see that was visible of producing sound, the light was somehow becoming deafening. "Move back!" I commanded, but her face showed no reaction; instead, she drew herself up and reached out an unsteady hand toward the glow. I jerked; what was she doing?! This was no time to be exploratory. "No!" I yelled. "Get out of there!"

"The gate!" she shouted back, her eyes fixed on the gliding mass of light. "I have to go back through!"

"You can't pass through it!" I had no idea what I was talking about, but I had to get her to back away from it, whatever it was. "You're forming it! It's drawing from your life force!"

Her eyes flicked briefly in my direction, but that hand kept moving closer to it. My muscles tensed in pent-up energy I didn't know I'd been reserving. What does she think she's doing?! Even if it is a gate of some sort--

Her forearm disappeared into the globe, and she gasped, a spasm running through her body. Without thinking, I leaped forward, plunging my hand into the light as well with the intention to grab her arm and pull her to safety.

What happened was completely different than was intended. The glow exploded, and I heard her cry out even as I felt the surge of energy coming from her and from it. Nothing less than a small sun seared through my eyes, and then I felt the touch of cool metal in my hand.
