Grand Avenue's Traffic Problems and Possible Solutions
Grand Avenue and 15th street have become some of the busiest intersections in Laramie. Traffic flow is outrageous and there are no turn lanes. With continued growth from the University and new businesses, Grand Avenue can not seem to keep up. WYDOT and several other groups are trying to come up with solutions but its not easy. According to the Laramie Boomerang WYDOT said, "We have to figure out how we'll safely move the traffic in the future." They are dicussing several options including removing street-side parking. Donald Pickett, a laramie resident, says "The university doesn't provide parking for the university students. Why should Laramie provide parking for the students?"
Here are two articles from the Casper Star and Laramie Boomerang concerning Grand Ave and it's traffic problems/solutions:
Grand could receive a facelift
Improvements slated for Grand
My Personal Feelings:
Yes, Grand is a disaster area. There ARE NO turn lanes and it causes people to stop in the middle of the street causing accidents. It's so congested with vehicles that you can't help but suffer from road rage when your driving on it. But I don't necessarily agree with Pickett's comment. He almost sounds like he is blaming university students. Firstly, we can't help that we don't have parking. And the university is aware of the problem. Secondly, some students DO live in Laramie. We should be considered residents OF Laramie. We have apartments and homes on grand that require us to park there. Laramie as a city needs to come up with ways to help ALL residents of the community. Even students.
