Your scalp feels itchy and you feel so embarrassed trying to scratch in private when no ones noticing. Sounds familiar? Its most likely that you are suffering from dandruff. Causes of dandruff are varied ranging from poor nutrition, frequent usage of strong shampoos, constipation, high stress levels to name a few most likely reasons for dandruff. Dandruff, scientifically termed as pityriasis capitis, is caused by a fungus called Pityrosporum ovale or Malassezia furfur. These fungi make the scalp dry, which causes the formation of scales and flakes. Though scalp's skin normally flakes off due to regeneration of skin cells, dandruff is excessive flaking and it is abnormal. Other people consider dandruff as an allergy resulting from a trigger like food and excessive sweating. Treatment: 1. This one needs a bit more advance preparation but nothing too complicated - just mainly time. Soak a few tablespoons of fenugreek seeds overnight in a bowl of water. Next day, grind the seeds into a paste - a regular food blender works fine for this. Once you've got your paste, massage it into your scalp and leave it there for about an hour before rinsing the mixture out. 2. Boil five teaspoons of dried used tea leaves in lime water and use it as a last rinse after shampoo. It will give the hair a lustrous shine and provides nourishment too. 3. Rosemary, Sage, Thyme or Neem - Make a strong tea-like solution from either Rosemary, Sage, Thyme or Neem leaves by adding the leaves to boiling water and leaving to brew for 24 hours. Strain and pour water over just-washed hair and leave in. 4. One of the best ways to control dandruff is to apply a mixture of vinegar and water on the scalp. Make a mixture of 2 teaspoons of vinegar and 6 teaspoons of water and apply it on the scalp before you go to bed. Keep it for the whole night with a towel around the head. Rinse your head with vinegar water again in the morning. If you continue to treat your hair with it for few months, it will serve your purpose. 5. Most widely used active ingredient used to treat dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, eczema and numerous other skin and scalp disorders. Synthesized in the 1930's, has strong anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. 6. Massage your scalp with warm coconut oil mixed with 1 teaspoon of boric powder. Let the oil sit for about 2 hours. Then wash off with the natural home made anti-dandruff shampoo. 7. Using baking soda is another way to get rid of dandruff and use a little oil to lubricate your scalp afterwards. The hair may be dry for a while, but after a few treatments your hair will be soft, shiny and dandruff free. 8. There are several things that you can do to prevent dandruff. One easy way is to apply a mixture of 8 table spoons peanut oil and the juice of half a lemon. Avoid the use of soaps, chemical shampoos, greasy creams, other hair products containing chemicals. Avoid hair treatments like bleaching, perming, and excessive use of hair dryers. 9. Dampen tamarind using water and combine it with molasses. Put this mixture on your scalp and after an hour, cleanse it using a shampoo. Do this once each week.
