    Heating oil and its properties

    Heating oil, which is the product of flammable liquid petroleum, is mainly used to fuel the boilers or building furnaces. It is also called as oil heat or no.2 heating oil in united states. Just like kerosene and diesel, heating oil also conforms to its own ASTM standard D396.
    Heating oil is delivered to municipal buildings, residential and commercial
    Places through tank trucks. This oil is generally stored in above ground storage tanks i.e. AST which are located in garages, basements, or outside places adjacent to the buildings. In rare cases these are in underground storage tanks. ASTs are advantageous because of their lower installations and cost factors. Heating oil is not used an industrial fuel or as a power generator.
    In US, this oil is frequently used in places where natural gas is not available. The theoretical efficiency of oil burner is 93%, if the oil burners and triple pass boilers are perfectly retained. To achieve this efficiency practically, it is required to reach the lower flue gas temperature at which oil burners may damage due to condensation. The practical efficiency is 86%.
    In UK, it is mixed with red dyes to form “red diesel”, and in Europe it is mixed with solvent yellow 124, to form “Euro marker”. Heating oil and diesel fuel are classified as distillates. Heating oil contains a mixture of petroleum derived hydro carbons. Its chemical formula is usually C20H42, C19H40, C18H38, C17H36, C16H34, C15H32 or C14H30. Heating oil condenses at a temperature of 250-350c, which is less than the condensation temperatures of heavy hydrocarbons like candle wax, bitumen, petroleum jelly (Vaseline). Heating oil is pressurized through an orifice for efficient burning. It weighs 7.2 pounds per gallon and it produces 138,500 BTU per gallon. The flash point is 52c.
    The federal regulators classified it as a hazardous material when exposed directly to air. The federal and state regulations are trying to provide proper transportation and storage because any leak from tanks and pipes is an environmental concern. When heating is blended with bio fuel a product called bio heat is obtained. This is just similar to bio diesel.
