Brother clashed with many cultures, cultures of the japanese, americans, latinos, and the italians. This movie was unique because of its back and forth gangster cultures mixing its way of honor. The japanese gangster style ways was brought to america by Aniki and was slowly coming together. One of the scenes that made this movie effective was the scene where the japanese gang is having a dinner and the two men show their serious honor for the leader of the gang. I believe that scene was effective because it showed the viewers how gangsters...the japanese in particular, are extremely willing to do anything to show the leader how much respect and honor they have for him. The two men literally hurt themselves to show their respect for the leader. One man shows the insides of his stomach and one chops his finger off and gives it to the leader. That is, to me, ultimate respect!
In the beginning of the movie Kitano once again uses silence. The effectiveness on silence is to some what confuse the audience. Let us figure out what Aniki is thinking while what goes around him. Bit after the beginning of the movie he begins to gradually talk and then again go back to silence. I think the more intense Aniki's situations get he becomes quiet and sort of let things go its ways.
The reason Aniki leaves the money with his friend was because of his respect for him. Aniki felt that he learned well and was very respectful and willing to do things for the other gangsters, so aniki left the money with the other guy and was left to be killed.
