read and review! :D
no, this won't be about fanfics. just felt like saying that because I'm in an anime reviewing mood after coming back from anime club tonight.
hime-chan's ribbon: I already covered this a while back. nothing new, although I like how the conclusion of each episode summarizes the basic plot. with fun, catchy music too.
chrno crusade: not chrono trigger/cross related, for you gamers out there. I think of it as hellsing with a lighter tone to it (although I have yet to see more than one episode of hellsing =\). main character reminds me of excel from excel saga, both in appearance and silly facial expressions. I always look forward to the intro and ending sequences because of the style in which they're carried out. today's episode had two highlights:
1. demonstrating a law of anime where you use up all your weaker ammunition on the enemy before busting out the magic bullet (literally here) at the last possible moment 2. a random plot twist involving a beach scene, the killing of many demons (via a before-after scene), and a maid licking blood off the demon-killer's hand =\
banner of the stars II: yes, there is a sequel. there are three seasons in the whole series: crest of the stars, banner of the stars, and banner of the stars II. there's also one oav which is more of a prequel sidestory. from the first episode, I'm expecting depressing scenes ahead. I'm also expecting fewer space battles, which is a bad thing in this case. hopefully the witty banter will continue.
scrapped princess: this series occassionally throws in a plot device/twist at the end of an episode, that makes you go "huh?" other than that, there's nothing new that I didn't cover. the plot is rather intriguing, and the battle scenes (done without cgi) between zefiris/shannon and the peacemakers are pretty sweet.
kimi ga nozomu eien: now this is a series I have mixed feelings for. it tries to pass itself off as a delicate romance story, but it feels like they pack too much too soon. incidentally, this belongs in the category of series based off of an h-game, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. already after the second episode, you have the following:
1. shy high school girl has had crush on senior guy for around 2 years 2. she confesses her love (in a scene which made me want to gag), but he didn't really care much for her to begin with 3. after a rather awkward beginning, he does a complete reversal of his relationship towards her 4. meanwhile, shy girl's friend, who helped set the two up to begin with and is also good friends with the guy, seems to develop feelings for the guy herself 5. shy girl and guy end up making love (and yes, they're in high school) 6. shy girl's friend inadvertently keeps getting in the way of shy girl and guy's relationship (but not in a bad, intentional way) 7. ultimately, while guy buys a present for shy girl's friend on her birthday, a car crash puts shy girl in a coma while she was waiting for the guy on a date
sounds like a soap opera? that's exactly how one reviewer labeled it. he said the middle episodes killed his interest, so I guess I know what to look forward to in the next few weeks. apparently, other reviewers weren't too enthusiastic about this series either.
and yet, I'm trying to see why this series gives me mixed feelings, as opposed to stuff like ai yori aoshi and ah! my goddess. I guess it's the soap opera effect. ai yori aoshi appears to be yet another harem anime, but it's more than that. for one thing, not all the girls are blatantly hitting on the guy. but the main thing is that the guy has true feelings of love for one girl alone. this is a story about two people trying to maintain a relationship while keeping it hidden out of necessity. and the scenes where they manage to express their feelings for each other tear at your heart.
although the sequel, enishi, doesn't have a lot happening yet. so far, I've seen seven episodes, and they're mainly about particular events without any major advances in plot. you still have the occasional sweet moment, but I'm almost at the point where I'm drumming my fingers on the table.
ah! my goddess (which will always be a personal favorite) has a variation of this theme, dealing with two people and overcoming obstacles to their obvious love for each other. the oavs don't do justice, since there are only five (even though the 4th and 5th ones made me cry ;_;). go out and get the manga, if you can =)
one last anime to review: godannar. random. very random. stuff happens very, very fast. old skool mech battles. and there's a good amount of fan service, much of it supplied by the jiggle factor. intro song has cheesy lyrics. ending song has rather strange lyrics, with one line involving the gouging of one's eyes out with fingers. doesn't quite go along in the manner in which the song is sung.
