Posture.
When I was seventeen, some guy I knew at school came up to me and said, "I can always spot you, even from across campus because you walk like this."
Then he hunched his shoulders way forward and let his arms hang loose. He looked ridiculous.
Since then, I've always believed that I have bad posture. I make an effort sometimes, but I just KNOW that people are laughing at me amongst themselves when I walk past.
But last week at the clinic, one of the participants came in and said, "Girl, you have such perfect posture! I'm so jealous."
I said, "What? No, I don't!"
She said, "Yes, you do! Every time I come in, you're carrying yourself so well. Seeing you always reminds me to pull my shoulders back and stop slouching."
Now I'm all confused and I don't know how to think of myself! Because part of me thinks she had to have been messing with me. I don't have perfect posture! I look stupid when I walk! Brandon in high school demonstrated*!
I asked Dwayne and Joyce for confirmation of whether I have good posture. They both said, "Yeah, you have pretty good posture."
Which... I don't know what that means! It is true? Or did they say that because they don't want to hurt my feelings, but they really think my posture isn't that great at all?
Oh, dear.
*Dwayne now tells me that that it was probably my heavy backpack that made me walk like that; I was overcompensating to ease back pain. He says I don't walk that in ordinary circumstances. It's just a heavy backpack thing!
