How to address these problems
While some might expect Goodman, a police officer, to advocate for greater regulation and more police, he actually takes a more interesting and innovative approach to addressing this looming arms race. Goodman’s big idea is to have ordinary citizens around the world leverage these very same technologies for good, and to play a more prominent role in maintaining the safety and security of themselves and other citizens. He points to several examples of ordinary individuals crowdmapping narco cartels in Mexico and journalists conducting public investigations on dictators in Eastern Europe. Goodman calls for the democratization of law enforcement and concludes that “public safety,” is too important to be left solely in the hands of professionals.
