In those days, mothers were routinely put under general anesthesia for childbirth. Nobody else on either side of the family had ever had red hair that anyone could remember. Subsequently, when the nurse handed the baby to her mother for the first time after awakening, Mother handed her back to the nurse with the statement, "This can't be my baby," and made the nurse take her away. Later, the nurse returned and in a troubled voice said, "I'm sorry, but we checked it out thoroughly, and this baby is yours." ...And thus the tone was set for the rest of the child's life.

When Eppylover's mother was growing up, their family milkman had a redheaded son named Andy. Andy always had a giant crush on Mother. When Mother got married, Andy became the family milkman. Although everyone knew better (Eppylover had too many of her father's looks and traits), many relatives and friends "did the math," and hilarity ensued. A few years later the family was obliged to trim their budget, and milk delivery was discontinued. Many years passed, and when Eppylover was in her teens, dairy delivery services were going the way of the horse-and-buggy, and word came that Andy's business was going down the tubes. Mother took pity, and for a short time the family had milk delivery again. The following year another red-headed child was born, a boy who looked like a rerun of Eppylover. Rerun the hilarity. He grew up to be very tall and thin, while Eppylover is very short and chubby. However, they both have the same coloring, and look very funny standing together.
I do not know whatever became of Andy the milkman.
