In order for your images to show properly, they need to be hosted on a webserver that allows images to be referenced and displayed by other websites. This is a process called "remote loading", which many popular free webspace providers no longer allow.
Images posted from webhosts that do not allow remote loading will show a broken image, or a box with an X in it, instead of the picture you meant to show.
Normally, your Internet Service Provider (ISP) will offer you some free web space as part of your monthly account. You should check with them and find out if they have allowed you space with remote loading.
If your ISP doesn't offer web space, or does not allow remote loading, you will need to search for other sites and review their policies to determine if they allow remote loading. In some cases, you may need to pay a small fee for the service.
Blurty cannot suggest image hosting services, as their policies change with little to no notice.
Make sure that you either control the web space you are using, or have permission from the owner of the web space to use their images. Just because an image is on the Internet doesn't mean that it's available for use in your journal. If you take an image from a place you do not control you run the risk of having the image changed or removed without your knowledge, and could be committing copyright infringment and bandwidth theft.
Once you have found a suitable image host, see http://www.blurty.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=47 for information on how to add a picture to your journal entries, or http://www.blurty.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=49 for information on how to add a background image to your journal. Last Updated: greentea, 2002-12-18 User pictures are icons or avatars used to represent yourself, your moods or feelings, your interests, etc. They are displayed in numerous locations on Blurty, including your userinfo page, your journal, the friends view of people who list you as a friend, comments, support requests, and the comments pages of your entries. In certain situations, you are given the option of selecting the user picture you'd like to use, rather than only displaying your default user picture.
To upload your user pictures, go to: http://www.blurty.com/uploadpic.bml
The picture must be a .GIF, .JPG, or .PNG. The actual picture can be no larger than 100x100 pixels, and the file size cannot be greater than 40kb. The image file must be on your local computer, or be accessible via a URL.
After entering your username and password, click on the "browse..." button beside the file box, and go find the image on your computer. Alternately, you can select the URL option and the type in the internet location of your image. Submit the form, and your default picture will appear on your journal (as long as the journal style you have chosen supports user picture display), on your profile, and when you make a comment.
If your paid status expires and you have more images currently stored on the server than your account type allows, they will remain there. Once you decide to upload a new picture, you will be required to delete pictures until you are at the correct number of pictures for your account type.
To set your default picture, enter keywords, or delete your pictures, go to http://www.blurty.com/editpics.bml .
To see all of your pictures, log in and visit: http://www.blurty.com/allpics.bml . Last Updated: greentea, 2002-12-14 All user pictures have a 100x100 pixel image-size limit, and a 40kb file-size limit. If your image exceeds either of those limits, Blurty will not allow you to upload the picture.
Also, one of the more common problems that occurs is that the picture itself is in bitmap format (.BMP), but has been renamed to .GIF, .JPG, or .PNG format. You can try converting the picture to the proper file type, or you can view this FAQ (http://www.blurty.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=109) to see about having someone help you. Last Updated: greentea, 2002-12-14 Your default user picture is viewable throughout the Blurty site, and unlike individual journals, it cannot be hidden. It is potentially available to anyone on the internet. Therefore, we require that your default user picture be considered decent and not contain anything too graphic. Because decency is tough to define, this is generally taken on a case by case basis. In general, this means no graphics depicting anything sexual or violent.
Your other user pictures can be slightly more graphic, as long as you do not use them in journals where it would be considered inappropriate. This, too, is taken on a case-by-case basis. If you have any questions as to whether or not your user pictures are acceptable, please contact the Abuse Team. To learn how to contact the Abuse team, see
http://www.blurty.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=79 Last Updated: miaow, 2003-08-27 There are several volunteers that will help you create or edit a userpic, and they have a community located at: http://www.blurty.com/community/userpics/
http://www.blurty.com/userinfo.bml?user=erin
http://www.blurty.com/userinfo.bml?user=girl_friday
http://www.blurty.com/userinfo.bml?user=lostinyoureyes
http://www.blurty.com/userinfo.bml?user=blu
There are a few rules:
- You must include your username with all contact.
- While the volunteers are willing to work on artsy/nude/erotic type images, don't send pornography, please.
- Be specific when requesting assistance. If you don't tell the volunteers what you want, they can't give you what you want. Please don't ask them to do "whatever looks good" and then change your mind and list specific things you want. Give that list of specifics first.
- Please don't email multiple volunteers with the same request.
- Please use email as your primary means of contact. Some volunteers are willing to work with userpics over instant messaging services but not all. Email and ask first, please.
- You may ask for up to 3 userpics per request. If you wish to have a lot of custom userpics made, please discuss this with the volunteer of your choice. Some volunteers are willing to do large batches of userpics, others are not, so email and ask first.
Please also keep in mind, this is run by volunteers and people can be very busy -- it may take time to get to your request, so please be patient. Last Updated: bertho, 2003-08-09 You need to make sure that each user picture has a corresponding keyword, or else it won't be possible to use different userpics with each entry or comment. Make sure to log in and visit: http://www.blurty.com/editpics.bml . From there, you can enter any set of words you'd like, such as "happy, laughing, smiles" or "friends at mall, October 2002."
To use a different user picture with each entry, you must be logged in, and choose the full mode update option (http://www.blurty.com/update.bml?mode=full), then select the user picture from the drop-down menu titled "Picture to use." You can also use different user pictures when posting from a local client by setting the correct post options (if supported by the client).
In order to choose a different userpic with each comment, you must be logged in. When commenting, select the user picture from the drop-down menu titled "Picture to use." Last Updated: greentea, 2002-12-14 The number of pictures you're allowed to have at any one time depends on your account type.
Free Accounts: 3 pictures
Early Adopters: 6 pictures
Permanent Accounts: 15 pictures
Once paid accounts come into use, they will have a specific number of user pictures related to their account status, as well. Any announcement regarding the arrival of paid accounts will be announced at the official news community (http://www.blurty.com/community/news). You may wish to add this community to your friend's list to be aware of any changes in the situation.
