What are the types of Blurty accounts?

There are four types of accounts on Blurty: Early Adopter, Free, Paid and Permanent.

Early Adopter accounts were issued to all users who joined Blurty before April 17, 2003. These accounts have access to most of the features available on Blurty as a thank you for helping to start up the site. As such, this type of account is no longer available.

Free accounts are currently issued to all new Blurty members. These accounts are allowed fewer userpics and friends than other account types and lack certain other benefits, such as the ability to create custom styles, and are limited to 10 friends.

Paid accounts are not yet in use, but will offer all the functionality of Early Adopter accounts, plus some extras to be determined at the time. More information on this account type will be available at http://www.blurty.com/paidaccounts/ when they are instituted.

Permanent accounts are currently only given to those who have made significant contributions to the site or official communities like News (http://www.blurty.com/community/news/).

Someone abandoned their Blurty journal. Can I have their username?

At this time, Blurty does not delete accounts for inactivity.

Even though it may appear that a user is no longer updating their journal, this can be misleading. The user might be making friends-only posts, or simply use the account for reading friends' posts and commenting on them. Some users find themselves without Internet access for prolonged periods of time, but will continue with their journal at a later date.

Also, usernames are not currently recyclable. Even if the journal were deleted, you wouldn't be able to claim the username. If your desired username is already taken, try a variation (such as adding numbers, extra letters, or underscores), or select another username entirely.

How do I get validated? It says I'm currently not validated!

When you sign up for a Blurty account, the server sends you a welcome message by e-mail, to be sure your address is valid. That e-mail tells you how to confirm that you've received it (you simply go to a web page specified in the e-mail). Once you do that, you'll be able to use all the features of your new account.

You have to re-confirm whenever you submit a new e-mail address to Blurty. Be sure to check your new e-mail account for the message Blurty will send to you.

If you didn't receive the message, the problem could be that too much of your e-mail is being filtered out by anti-spamming software, so you might have to find out from your e-mail provider how filtering is done.

If you need to have the message re-sent to you, do the following:

1.) Go to http://www.blurty.com/editinfo.bml to be sure you entered your e-mail address correctly. If you have to change it, instructions for confirming the new address will be e-mailed to you. But if it was already correct, continue to the next step.

2.) Go to http://www.blurty.com/lostinfo.bml to have your password e-mailed to you. When you do this, the server will notice you are not validated, and it will include instructions in the e-mail, telling you where to go to confirm that you've received it.

Why are there errors when I try to validate?

"Error: One or more errors occurred processing your request. Please go back, correct the necessary information, and submit your data again.

You cannot go to this page directly, you must have a registration URL to complete this registration."

This notice appears if you do not have the complete URL in the location or address window of your browser.

The URL that Blurty sends will look something like this. This is an example, and will return a result you can't use: http://www.blurty.com/confirm/501286.9ssksbn4aa2kr7h

If you are getting an error when you try to validate, try copy/pasting or typing the confirmation URL into your browser's address/location bar.

E-mailed URLs do expire; if you don't use them within the limit, they will expire and another one will need to be issued. If this is the case, go to: http://www.blurty.com/lostinfo.bml

How can I change the email address that Blurty uses?

Your email address and a ton of other settings can be modified here: http://www.blurty.com/editinfo.bml

Once you change your email address, you will need to re-validate it. If you don't receive an email to re-validate your address, see "How do I get validated? It says I'm currently not validated!" (http://www.blurty.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=4)

I forgot my username / password. How can I retrieve it?

To recover your account information, go here: http://www.blurty.com/lostinfo.bml and fill out the form. The information will be mailed to you.

You will need to have access to a previously validated email address, or the email address currently registered on your Blurty account, in order to receive your username and/or password. If you do not have access to a previously validated email address or to the current email address registered to your account, and can not remember your password, we regret to inform you that we can not send your password to you.

For security reasons, Blurty cannot send your password to any other email addresses. If you do not have access to any of the email addresses listed on the account and you would like to continue using Blurty, you will need to create a new account: http://www.blurty.com/create.bml

What are all the login options? What do never expire and session only mean?

1.) If you are using a computer that other people may have access to, your login should be set to "session only", so that it will expire when exit out of your browser (requiring you to manually login the next time you use Blurty).

If your login is currently set to "never expire", or auto login, you can change it back to "session only" simply by clicking the "Logout" link at the top right hand corner of the main Blurty website (http://www.blurty.com) and then exit out of the browser.

You can also change your login/logout settings at: http://www.blurty.com/login.bml

2.) After logging out through the "logout" link, exit out of your browser. Your logout will not be completely secure until you have quit your browser. After you exit out of the browser, it may be a good idea to re-start the browser and come back to http://www.blurty.com to double-check and make sure you aren't being logged in automatically.

3.) If you have the downloaded Blurty client on your computer, it is best not to have it set on auto-login with "remember password" checked, if the computer is accessible to other people.

4.) When you login to Blurty, your browser writes a "cookie" to your computer that keeps track of certain information, so that you don't have to keep logging in on every page. The "bind to IP address" option stores your IP address in the session information for your cookie, so that your cookie only works with that specified address.

Please note that this option does not stop you from logging in to Blurty from another computer, but is merely a deterrent to account "hijacking".

If you have a dialup Internet Service Provider (ISP), your IP address probably changes too frequently for this option to be useful.

What's all this talk about paid accounts?

At some point in the future, Blurty will allow users the option of paying for an account in order to have more features or simply to show support for the site. We will let you know when this option becomes available.

You can read more about paid accounts here: http://www.blurty.com/paidaccounts/
