| What a long, strange trip it's been |
[03 Jul 2004|10:23am] |
Yeah, cheesy subject line. Get over it.
Probably not a big surprise to anyone, but I'm stepping down as support admin. johnbot and empyreal will be taking over, effective a few months ago.
Short story, I don't have time for it. Long story, I'll probably have an entry in my journal later. The whole truth? Email me. Unless I don't know you, because you'll be deleted immediately, and you would probably deserve it.

| Downtime update: All clear |
[28 Apr 2004|09:40am] |
It appears that everything is working fairly smoothly at this point, and there are no known current problems with the service. news will be updated shortly to reflect this. Meantime, if you notice any glitches or other problems, please check this community, and news, to see if there have been any posts about it. If not, feel free to open a Support request about it.
Thanks.

| Blurty site impairment |
[27 Apr 2004|04:29pm] |
Note to all users: Blurty is currently experiencing a number of outages and impairments within the site, which may prevent access to viewing journals, and doing other things around the site. If you are seeing errors while you use the site, they are almost certainly related to these issues, and they are indeed being worked on.
In the meantime, please do not open a Support request if you are experiencing technical problems with the site. Please check, bookmark, maybe even friend, and definitely check back frequently with the news community, at one of these links:
http://news.blurty.com/ http://www.blurty.com/users/news/ http://www.blurty.com/news.bml
(Hey, hopefully one of those will work!)
Any updates will be posted to news, and a post will be made to announce when everything is back to normal. At that time, if you are still experiencing any problems, you may let us know. However, posting requests regarding this issue will not make things move any faster, and may in fact make it take longer. Support volunteers do not have any information other than what is posted currently.
Thank you for your patience.

[31 Mar 2004|05:57pm] |
Added I2s for thefaded and sheep4859. Gave esoteric_heart full supporthelp. Revoked supporthelp from derivative at her request.
I'm on a new computer now and haven't transferred all my files yet, so unless hourglass or someone has an I2 or SH welcome mail lying around, it'll have to wait - please coment here first if you're going to mail them so we don't flood them. ;-)
The newbies can feel free to email me or ask questions here or on IRC if they're lost.
Congrats to all (including derivative because she's leaving for a good purpose).

| It's that time again! |
[08 Feb 2004|05:23pm] |
The Abuse Team currently has 2 openings. We'll be accepting and looking over applications for the next couple of days, so if you're interested, apply away! Instructions on how to submit your application and what should be included can be found here: http://www.blurty.com/userinfo.bml?user=abuse .
Please take note that the Abuse Team has activity requirements. If you do not think that you will be able to donate at least a couple of hours a week to the board, then this is probably not the place for you to consider helping out. Abuse work can be frustrating and monotonous at times and funny and interesting at others. Basically, what I'm trying to say is that it's not always fun. That's about it! Apply away!

| Suggestion for FAQ revision |
[12 Dec 2003|01:13pm] |
I wasn't sure if this should go here or in userdoc, so I decided to play it safe and put it here.
As there have been many support requests asking if deleted entries can be restored, I feel that FAQ 21: "Can I delete a journal entry I wrote?" should include this information. A possible way to do this would be revise the first sentence of the FAQ as follows:
"Yes, you can. However, note that this function is permanent and that you will not be able to restore any deleted entries. To delete entries using the web interface:"

| More on spiffifying support |
[22 Nov 2003|12:40pm] |
I played around a little this morning trying to throw together something that doesn't use javascript, and now that I'm done cursing the w3c and every web browser ever made, I've decided to just show what I have.
Main point, is the colors. The yellow/orange is the same color used on Blurty comments for the subject/date background (#FFDF55), and the green is just a straight forward #00CC00. The red is #FF0000, and the dark orange is the #F4A965 used in the Settings submenu on the Blurty banner. Yes, you'll only see closed reports all on the closed page, but I figured I'd toss one in just for color reference purposes. Also thought maybe we could differentiate between "answered" and "still needs help". There's obviously something in the code that marks it, so it shouldn't be too hard to make the code change for it. I did two different color sets - I think the first makes more sense from a logical standpoint, but I think the second looks nicer and is more likely to be what the board looks like at any given point. Or we could ignore it and make them all yellow because it's pretty. :)
Now the problems versus the javascript version. I tested it in IE6 and Opera 7.2, and draconid tried out an earlier version of the page in whatever version of Mozilla she uses, and we've gathered this much:
1) linking whole rows is invalid HTML. IE does it quite well, but nothing else does. I had to switch to linking each cell individually, so now you have to actually be on text for the link to work instead of just anywhere on the line.
2) Highlighting. Opera handles it very nicely, but nothing else does - no highlighting at all unless someone knows a CSS trick I don't. (For those who don't have Opera - hovering anywhere on the line makes the entire background white regardless of its status. It made more sense than having a gajillion colors. Unfortunately, as noted above, you still have to be on the text to click)
wspnut's version works nicely, and because he kept the link on the request number, the board is still as useable as it is now if you have javascript disabled. I'm thinking we go with the js version, but make it so that it links the subject as well as the request number, so non-js people still get a little benefit from it.
Anyway: Version one: http://bertho.heterosapiens.com/sprot.html Version two: http://bertho.heterosapiens.com/sprot2.html
Edit: Oh yeah - I have no idea why, but IE is showing the table frame as grey. It should be white.

| New Thing |
[14 Nov 2003|08:51pm] |
Hey all! *waves*
From now on, whenever you move a request about a suspension to the Abuse category, I think it would be awesome if you could comment to the user first, and say something like this.
Dear User, Your request has been moved to the Abuse Category. The Abuse Category is a non-public area of the support board, manned by the Abuse Team. The Abuse Team deals specifically with suspenions and violations of the TOS. While you are waiting for a response, feel free to see here: http://www.blurty.com/talkread.bml?journal=abuse&itemid=198819 for some information that the team would like for you to have.
SO yeah. That entry basically tells them how they can contact us, and 9 times out of 10 tells them why they were suspended. This isn't required or anything like that, but we've been exceptionally busy as of late, and would appreciate the help.
Thanks, guys!

This hasn't been a big issue on Blurty , but I thought I'd make a preemptive strike.
Doing support is usually a thankless job. You might see people jump ahead of you - this doesn't mean we hate you. I have some pretty strong ties to LJ, and I know a lot of the support volunteers. I know it's probably frustrating for you, but I need to know people before I think of giving privs to anyone.
Anyway, to the point. If you have a problem with someone else, talk to me. I really dont care what you have to say about them. You can call them the worst cocksucker in the world. That's fine. But tell me first. I'll talk to them if I think it's a serious problem
In short, if you don't get along with someone, tell me and I'll try to figure out how to fix it so we can all just get along.
And if this makes no sense, it's because I'm pretty drunk right now...

| Semagic |
[04 Nov 2003|09:42pm] |
The download link for the Blurty Semagic client is unavailable, and we're not sure when it will be back. I'm going to ask the admins to temporarily change the URL, but until then, if you see someone complaining that the link doesn't work, you can point them to http://bertho.heterosapiens.com/blurty/ The change has been made.
