Valaquenta [11 Oct 2004|10:55pm]
guardianofhope
As I'm reading this book, it becomes very obvious that things are written out of order. The Valaquenta covers the history of the Valar, the Maiar and the Enemy. These are the entire histories, whereas after the Valaquenta it tells how those histories came to be.

Example:
In the Valaquenta it states the relationships between the Valar i.e. marriages. It states that Tulkas is married to Nessa, whereas in the Quenta Silmarillion, Tulkas has yet to even arrive in Middle-Earth.

Valaquenta

Eru= Iluvatar

Maiar are established as being powerful, but lesser than that of the Valar.

The Valar are blatently listed, which is good. Then it goes into details about each of them

The Lords of the Valar:
Manwe
Ulmo
Aule
Orome
Mandos
Lorien
Tulkas

The Queens of the Valar:
Varda
Yavanna
Nienna
Este
Vaire
Vana
Nessa

Manwe Sulimo (surname):

Manwe is married to Varda, Lady of the Stars. She is hated most by Melkor, and she has often come to the aid of Manwe. It is said that they are never parted.

Manwe's throne sits upon Oiolesse, the uttermost tower that is on Taniquetil, the tallest mountain on Earth.

Ulmo is established as the absolute loner. Very rarely does he even attend the counsels of the Valar. The Ulumuri is the horn of Ulmo.

I'll post the rest of my notes tomorrow. And there are -many- of them...

Goodnight.

Ainulindale (My Notes) [09 Oct 2004|06:45pm]

Well...the lovely Bridget has covered a decent portion of my notes...but I went a bit overboard...:P

My Notes (minus what Bridget has already provided)

Pronunciation
In the back of my book (and probably yours) there are two pages which cover the pronunciation of various letters. Here I've 'deciphered' Ainur

AI=the sound of the English 'eye'
UR=the sound of 'oor'
Thus Ainur= 'Eyenoor'

While this is a task for the tongue...it's the proper pronunciation.

It is established that Melkor's only resistance is destroying what the Valar build.

I thought I had more notes, but in truth my notes ran over into the Valaquenta. If it's wanted, I'll post those later tonight.

Also, to answer your question Eldalie is another name for the Eldar. The first of the Children of Iluvatar.

"Arda" is what the Elves call Earth.
"Ea" is the "World that Is."

I found it interesting in this part of the book that Melkor at first wanted good things for the children of Iluvatar (bottom of pg 18). But then it says that he became jealous of the gifts that Iluvatar promised to give his children.

Something else I thought was neat: "but of all these water they most greatly praised. And it is said by the Eldar that in water lives yet the echo of the Music of the Ainur more than in any substance else that is in this earth..."

Ainur/The Valar (Elvish)/Great Ones:
*"The Powers of the World": (correct me if I'm wrong on this:) Iluvatar allowed some of the Valar to stay with him in his dwelling apart from the world, but others were allowed to venture into the world. BUT those who went into the world Iluvatar created had to stay there so that they would be tied to the world as the world was to them.
*"...have not seen as with sight the Latter Ages or the ending of the World."
*those who went into Ea contributed to it's overall appearance and had to work to make it ready for the coming of the Children of Iluvatar.
*"...took shape after that manner which they had beheld in the Vision of Iluvatar." So they took the form of the foreshadowed images of the Children of Iluvatar.
*Can take the form of male or female by their own choice.

Ainu/Ulmo (Elvish name):
*...of the water.
*Was instructed most deeply by Iluvatar in music.
*(Allied with Manwe)

Manwe:
*"...of the airs and winds."
*Most noblest of the Ainur.
*(Allied with Ulmo)
*Brother of Melkor in the mind of Iluvatar.
*"...was the chief instrument of the second theme that Iluvatar raised up again the discord of Melkor.

Aule:
*"...of the fabric of the earth."
*Has knowledge and skill hardly less than that of Melkor.
*Delights and finds pride in making things, and the thing made; gives freely.

Melkor:
*Desired to rule the Kingdom of Arda.

The First Battle of the Valar with Melkor:
*for the dominion of Arda.
*the Elves know little of it.
*Melkor would undo everything that the Valar did in Arda.
*the work of the Valar in Arda was never wholly fulfilled in the way they wanted it, but it was also not done in vain.

Questions:
*Who is Eldalie that is mentioned in the last paragraph?
*Definition of the Deeps of Time?

This is the creator/maintainer of this community. My purpose in this post is to tell all of those who may be interested in joining what my intention of creating this community is.

I have recently decided to re-read The Silmarillion after only having made it through about half of the book on my first attempt. I am an avid Lord of the Rings and Tolkien fan, and I enjoy discussing anything that has to do with either. I hope that many will join who share my interests.

Thanks for taking the time to read and I hope to see you join!
