Update on the hardware failure
Hi all. Just a quick update.
We were able to get a substitute motherboard in place so that Cluster 2 people are back with us. Things are a still wacky, and the configuration is not optimum, but it's not as bad as it could have been if we hadn't had an extra board on hand. Sorry about the bumpy ride yesterday afternoon while we were trying to get the temp motherboard to work with the existing server. It was more fun than you can imagine!
The new motherboard should be here later today. We hope it will be the right one. :)
We'll keep you updated. Sorry about this nonsense but it should be resolved soon. We like to think of it as a learning experience. :)

New server motherboard failure
Well, so much for the new server! :-)
The motherboard on the brand new server failed this morning. We are not sure what happened but we are sure that it is dead. We don't believe that any data was lost, and if any was, it wasn't much because we had just backed up before the red alert sirens went off. We have a new motherboard on the way. In the meantime, some of the newest journals, those on Cluster 2, will be unreachable. Everything else on Blurty, including all of the journals on Cluster 1, should work fine. Those of you have problems accessing your journals today, and it is a very small percentage of users, should be back up and running either tonight or tomorrow at the latest.
Sorry about the problem. This is the first time we've ever had a motherboard die since the mid 90's, so it came as a bit of shock to us.
Hope everyone is having a great day!

This is just a quick update. The new server is online and running. A few hours after throwing it in the lineup, it crashed. Uh-oh! Don't worry though, we'll be watching it and tuning it throughout the weekend.
Those of you on cluster 2 are on the new machine and most of the http is also being done from the new box. Those of you on cluster 1 are on the older box, but don't feel bad, it's not old, it's old school.
More updates to follow.

Welcome to 2003, & Other Stuff
We hope everyone's 2003 is off to a great start! Things here are Blurty HQ are starting to get back up to speed after the holiday slack-off.
I few days ago we upgraded some of the backend components, including updating all of your user accounts to make them LJ cluster-friendly. A few of you might have noticed some broken images for a few hours during the upgrade. That was because we did the conversion slowly, over a couple of days, and a few things were strange on some accounts as they switched. Only a few people even noticed, and everything was fine once the changeover was completed. Now you are all cluster 1 users - no more cluster 0. I know you're excited!
We also upgraded some other random stuff that I won't even bother going into here.
Suffice to say, this site is growing fast
(we'll be closing in on 100,000 accounts before long) and we're trying to stay one step ahead of the wave. (Apologies for the lame metaphor.)
Current plans call for another server to be added sometime before the end of February. That will greatly increase our computing power and should keep Blurty fast and furious into the foreseeable future.
We will be changing the account structure pretty soon. Don't worry, anyone who has an existing Early Adopter account won't be effected. We'll just be adding some new options for new members. Stay tuned for that change sometime in February as well.
There are a bunch of other things we've got in mind, but I don't want to overwhelm you with too much all at once. Thanks for all of your feedback and support as we continue to fine tune Blurty. Keep those suggestions coming.

New Logged-In Navigation
We've added the much-requested, previously-promised, and slightly snazzy "logged in" navigation menu. On top of that (as if that weren't enough), the search box has arrived as well. Yes, these are items that should've been on the site since the beginning, but better late than never, right?
Please give these features a spin and let us know if you find any bugs, glitches, or weirdness.
Thanks a bunch!

UTF-8 Support and a New Mac Client
Hope you are having a great weekend. We've enabled UTF-8 support, which will allow those of you who journal in other languages to properly display your work. If you're seeing any strange symbols in your journal, take a look at htis FAQ and fee free to file a support request if it doesn't answer all of your questions:http://www.blurty.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=107
Also, we've added the Phoenix client for Macintosh. This client works for Macs running anything from System 6 through OS 9. It can be downloaded through the Mac Client Download Page:http://www.blurty.com/download/?platform=Macintosh
Thanks for hanging out at Blurty, and let us know if you have any comments or questions!

New Option Added For Front Page Exclusion, Etc.
After several requests and suggestions, we've added an option to the Modify Your Options page to allow users to opt out of being included on the front page of the site. If you would rather that your public journal entries not be included on the front page of Blurty, please go to your options page and uncheck the "Allow Front Page Display" option.
Most people do want their entries to appear on the front page, and if you are in that group, then you should leave the option checked. You can turn it on and off on your whim.
Here is the relevant page to check out the new option:http://www.blurty.com/editinfo.bml
Some other notes of possible interest:
- As of today, we are on the new Blurty server. Please let us know if you notice anything strange that you think might be related to the move.
- After many mock ups, mock downs, and various arm wrestling matches between competing factions, we think we almost have the much-requested Logged-In links and Search ready to add to the site. Look for that to appear later this week, or so.
- We expect to stop allowing new Early Adopter signups sometime in the next few weeks. Thanks to everyone who has been helping out with the site in this first month and please keep reporting any problems you find via the support area.
- If you're in the U.S., don't forget to vote in the election next Tuesday. No matter what side you're on, this is an important election and we encourage everyone to get out there and vote.

New Blurty Server
For those of you that care about such things, we are going to be moving Blurty to a new server. It is currently running on a server that is also used for some development stuff. The new server is a Blurty-only dual 2ghz Xeon box w/ 2 gig of ram and other fun stuff. The move should happen in the next couple of days.
There have been no speed problems with Blurty yet, but we are definitely growing way faster than expected. We figured that putting in the new server now, before there are any problems, would be the best idea.
As we grow, we'll keep you updated on hardware related stuff, as the LJ crew does.

Mac Client Added, Navigation Suggestions, et al
After getting several requests, we've added the iJournal Mac client to the download
page. The client is written and maintained by cryo
. If you have suggestions for the improving the client, or problems with it, please file a support request here or go directly to his development journal
over at LJ.
We are working on some improvements to the logged in navigation on the site. We've had numerous requests already to add some more links to the nav-bar, and we are working on it. Please share your thoughts on what you'd like to see in the Blurty Suggestions Community
We're also working on a new default style for Blurty journals. Right now it's using the LiveJournal default style and we want to add a little zing. angel
is the one working on it, and she's also started posting some Style and Customization Tutorials
that you should check out if you're curious about that sort of thing.
Overall, things are growing much faster than we had estimated. Thanks for everyone who has been giving feedback. A special thanks to the LiveJournal people who have stopped in to offer advice, suggestions, and just to say hello. With everyone's help, we're making progress. :)

Search by Username requests
Several people have requested that we add a "Search By Username" feature that would allow members to search for other members based on username. Does anyone have any feedback on the idea? Good? Bad? Indifferent?
It's something we can certainly do if people want it. Use the "Comment on this" link to let me know your thoughts.

Mac Client Coming Soon & Other Stuff
Thanks for everyone for the great feedback. We've been working hard on dealing with issues that have been brought to our attention. We should have a Mac client for you Apple maniacs in the next week or so. The community search should be working now. Some other stuff has been straightened out or improved too.
There is still more documentation being added as we go along. If you see something that seems hard to figure out, or not quite clear, please let us know and we'll see if we can put together a better guide. The system has so many features that good How To and F.A.Q. info is crucial. Let us know what you find confusing.
If you find problems or have suggestions, please report them via the Suggestions Community
or the Support System
and we will take a look.
So far, so good. Thanks for everyone. :)

Public testing is now open!
Well, here goes something.
After several months of tweaking and changing and writing and editing and whatever else, we're opening this baby up to the public. This is not the final stable version of Blurty, not by a longshot. We are still testing, but now you can help.
There is only so much we can do without the help of members and people outside our tiny circle of testers. So, please take a look around, test out various features, see if anything breaks. Whatever problems you do find, please report them
so that we can take a look.
A couple of issues I'm working on right now are:
- Custom Styles Support Area - need to upload some more support docs for people who want to create their own styles.
- Community Search Page - the community search is being fixed right now.
I'm sure there are other things I'm not thinking of, but those are a couple of the places where you'll see our dust. Thanks for being a part of Blurty!

Blurty will be ready for beta testing soon
This update is really more of a test of the News Style than a real news update.
While I'm testing though, I might as well mention that our alpha testing is just about done and we're almost ready for the beta stuff. That means that real users (you) will become the Guinea pigs. I'm sure there are some links that still need to be fixed, and some more docs that need to be added, but things are looking pretty good.
If you see any problems, please let us know. The way this site is going to get better is for members to let us know about the problems they find. Check out the support center
and definitely submit a support request
if you see anything strange or out of place. Broken links are at the top of our "find and destroy" list, so please take a moment and let us know about any you find.
Thanks for reading this and for being a part of this experiment.
