Thanks- not complaints
Do you feel life is treating you unfairly? Are you tempted to complain? Try this. Take a sheet of paper and list all of the things God has done for you just within the past couple of days. You'll be amazed to see all the little blessings that we sometimes take for granted- getting up in the morning, fixing breakfast, having lunch, dinner, talking with friends, being able to walk, being able to see, being able to hear your favorite song, being able to see the birds....
Its also quite amazing the difference it makes when you start to focus on positives instead of negatives. So take a look at your list and give thanks not complaints- then you'll realize that you never really had anything to complain about after all. And remember, even the little things, especially the little things we take for granted, deserve praise.

A prayer from "Daily Heartlight":
Heavenly Father, it is all too easy for me to form my impressions of others not on what they are as individuals, but on the basis of where they come from, what groups they belong to, etc. And yet, Father, in the same breath, I thank you in that you do not judge me that way! Forgive me, I pray, Father, of this sin. Increase my faith and forgive me of my unbelief. Slay any prejudice you find in my heart, Father, and pour into the vacancies there abundant grace and mercy. May I not stereotype people, rather, enable me to see people for who they are indeed. And then may I in deed bless them as your Son would give to them. For I live in -- and pray in -- his name. Amen.
I have caught myself doing this a lot lately- placing hasty judgements on people-not always intentionally but still...I realize its not right. This prayer was right on time- as always.

We should all accept ourselves unconditionally - warts, morning breath, and all. Just like we brush our teeth in the morning to freshen our mouth, we can also brush up on our kindness, our tolerance, our patience, or whatever it is we feel could use some improvement. God loves us unconditionally, because He sees in us His divine creation, and His hope is eternal that we will strive to simply be ourselves, as He created us.

An Encouraging Word
Think about the words you say, especially when there is a disagreement. Next time, use encouraging words, ones that will build up, not tear down. Aim to not only settle the issue but to do so in a way that strengthens those involved.

Temptation in our lives comes in many forms. Remember, Satan hits us where we're the weakest. If we're tired and hungry and alone, he knows what to throw in front of us to make us sin. If our egos are bruised, he knows how to tempt us to make us feel better about ourselves. If we know something is going to be painful, Satan will throw an easy out in front of us -- something outside of God's will for us -- a way to avoid the pain and lead us away from God. And finally, Satan tempts us through our strengths. Just as Jesus could have shown His power and strength through turning the stones to bread, or leaping off the temple spire, so you and I can be tempted to show just how strong we are and begin to rely on our own strengths, our own power, our
own talents -- rather than on God.
Be wary. Watch out for the snares and temptations Satan will lay before you. They all have one purpose -- to stop God's purpose in your life. Don't let the devil win those little battles. Remember, he's already lost the war!

Grace (This was really a blessing to me this morning- perhaps it can touch someone else today.)
Crossposted in biblestudyFrom the Fathers's Heart:
My child, when you're covered with the evidence of your convictons, and you're cowering inshame of your condition, look up. I'm still here. Don't you know My grace is enough to cover all your weaknesses? As long as you think you're strong enough without Me, My grace is useless to you. I already know your faults. But it was My grace that made you My child in the beginning. And it will be My grace that will always lead you back home to Me. A Grateful Response:
Just when I think I've had enough, when I've reached a solid wall, You appear on the scene, Lord- but not with condemnation, silence, or sarcasm. Instead, You are there holding out Your strong arms to encourage me, giving me grace to cover every weakness. Your grace is sufficient.

Shaped from Clay
Walking in relationship with God is much like the potter and the clay. When He first enters our lives, we are like a piece of clay with many lumps. As we learn to trust Him and let Him mold our lives, however, we become perfectly aligned with His true purpose for our lives. Soon we are transformed into beautiful, strong vessels.
God wants to make a beautiful vessel from the clay that is your life. Don't neglect your relationship with Him. Open your heart and allow Him to mold and shape you until you are all He created you to be.

-From "God Speaks Devotional"
The only way we can know God is by experiencing Him. Many of those experiences come as we take time to listen quietly for His voice.
Like any other relationship, experiencing God takes both quality and quantity time and a willingness to listen to Him. There is no substitute for either. Like any other relationshp, we must be willing to make a conscious investment of time and effort.
Slow down and listen for God's voice today. He speaks often to each of us deep within the recesses of our hearts and minds. The trouble is that most people are moving too fast to receive the transmission. You may be surprised to hear what you've been missing.

Let us not be guilty today of attempting to move ahead of God when He says to "sit still." Likewise, when through the Word of God we are moved in a particular direction, let us not question that direction, but do the will of God. Doubt, concern, and even fear may completely cloud us today but God will remove them in His own good time and will provide direction for us if we simply trust Him and wait upon Him.
It goes without saying...
How wonderful to know that that God is so much greater than anything we can imagine or create. His ways and even His thoughts are so far beyond our finite minds that we can't begin to comprehend Him. When we come to Him with our problems and our difficulties, we never have to worry about whether He's big enough to handle them.
So we must remember to never put God in a 'box' or put limitations on His powers: "Oh God will never be able to fix this...." That is so untrue for He is an awesome God. Rejoice that though you may not be able to understand Him, you will always be able to trust Him.

-Just as earthly parents enjoy talking with their child, our Heavenly Father enjoys hearing from you.
-Prayer is communication with God- not just asking for things in a time of need or trouble, but it includes listening, discussion, praise and worship. I personally like to use part of my prayer time just to magnify and glorify the Father for being the awesome God that He is.
-Prayer keeps your relationship with God healthy and helps to build and maintain your faith- so when in time of need, you will be able to stand on firmer ground.
-Prayer is a way of humbling yourself and is the opposite of doing things by yourself. Receiving direction from God is the greatest help you can get.
Just remember this, if all else fails- try prayer, have faith and believe that it truly changes things. God can do more in one minute than you can do in a lifetime.

A prayer I read in one of my email devotions this morning. I sure needed this:
Faithful and loving God, you have so richly blessed me with salvation by your grace. Please strengthen me out of the riches of that grace. I am sometimes weak and falter in my faithfulness. I know your grace is lavish, but I don't want to presume on it or abuse it. Please give me strength and courage to live faithfully and passionately for you until the day I see you face to face and share with you in your glory and victory. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen

You Cannot Fail!
The reason so many of us fail to experience complete divine peace is because we expect to have it all without a struggle, and when the conflict comes and the battle wages long, we become discouraged and surrender. Hard places are the very school of faith and character, and if we are to rise over mere human strength and exhibit the power of God that is in us, it must be through a process of conflict.
Think of these things: like the old figure of the bush that burned, but was not consumed, or of the Vision in the house of the Interpreter of the flame that would not expire, notwithstanding the fact that the demon ceaselessly poured water on it, because in the background stood an angel ever pouring oil and keeping the flame aglow. And so it is with us, when the enemy comes to attack, do we continue to stand on His Word- knowing that by faith God will lead us and keep us or do we easily give up the fight?
No, dear suffering child of God, you cannot fail if only you dare to believe, to stand fast and refuse to be overcome.
From "Streams in the Desert Devotional" by Mrs. Charles E. Cowman. Paraphrased by Sokism.

Right to the point
You will never fully understand that God is all you need, until God is all you have.
|Friday, July 11th, 2003|
Thoughts that disturb and trouble us seldom come from God. It is generally best to put them away, and throw ourself, with increased trust in Him and mis-trust of self, at His feet. And never forget, amid whatever may befall you, dryness, coldness, desolation, and disappointment, consciousness of many faults, and of great weakness, and want of faith,--that where love is, there God is sure to be. He never yet has suffered any soul to fall wholly from Him which, amid all its frailties and falls, clings to Him in love.

From Today's Daily Word:
I acknowledge the gift of God's grace even in the midst of those "less-than-perfect" moments in life when things seem to go wrong. I can because instead of seeing only the difficulties in a situation, I choose to see the potential for good.
I imagine God's grace as my Creator's loving acceptance of me, even in those moments when I am perhaps not acting from the wisdom of my soul. God knows the good in me, and because I am divinely created, I have all I need to realize my soul's highest and best expression.
I give thanks that God's grace is my Creator's loving acceptance of me.
All I can do right now is just thank God for this word today. The way I've been feeling all week, feelings of self doubt...then the way I reacted to a situation yesterday...this is exactly what I needed.
And I thank and praise God for each of you for being a part of this community with the common goal of sharing and uplifting one another through inspirational devotions, words, etc., and not getting caught up in debates and such over theological doctrine. This is something that I don't take for granted. The community is set up to where only members can post and leave comments. There are no anonymous comments allowed so if any of you ever have any issues or problems with someone in the community being disrespectful or rude, please let me know. My email is email@example.com. I want this to be a drama-free, stress-free environment for all, where we can feel truly safe and comfortable sharing our devotions without having to be concerned with being flamed or judged for whatever we believe in.
Sending out much love, peace, and blessings to you all! Your community moderator, Soki

He is Worthy
Jesus taught us that worship is not about a place, but about our Father. Knowing that our Father is worshipped by the heavenly hosts should inspire us, humble us, and motivate us to do the same, no matter where we may find ourselves. He is worthy of our worship, reverence, and awe.
Holy God, Holy Father, Holy King of the ages, I praise you for the wonderful gift of your grace. I know that in comparison to your glory, I am not worthy to be in your presence. But you have made me worthy and holy by the sacrificial blood of Jesus, the Lamb slain for my sins. Thank you for this incredible gift so that I may worship you as I should! In Jesus' name I praise you. Amen.

He's In Control
He's in control, even when it doesn't look like it- Daniel 2:21
Sometimes it's hard to understand what's going on around us. If God's in control, why do evil people prosper? If God's in control, why do good people fail, lose everything, or even die young? Does God really care what's going on in the world? Why does He allow some people to have so many good things and others to suffer so much?
It's difficult for us to understand God's eternal purpose in everything that we see happening around us. But we can know this. Everything that happens on this earth is under His control. Everything. Sure, it doesn't make much sense to us sometimes- and it may even cause us to stray away from Him- in anger that He would even allow these things to happen. But it's all apart of His plan. He is in control of everything and is much wiser than you or I can ever conceive of being. And sometimes, every once-in-a-while, He lets us see a little portion of that plan. He allows us to understand some of His thinking.
Take comfort in His sovereignty and purpose yourself to serve Him, no matter what He allows in your life. Hope not in the world but in the grace and eternal purpose of God through Christ Jesus.

-Trust can be difficult, especially when things don't make sense. But they make sense to God. Ask Him to help you keep the faith- trust and believe that in spite of what it looks like- everything is truly working together for your good.
-Jesus is our mouth, through which we speak to the Father; He is our eye, through which we see the Father; He is our right hand through which we offer ourselves to the Father. Unless He intercedes, there is no intercourse with God. -- St. Ambrose
-Do not fear circumstances. They cannot hurt us, if we hold fast by God and use them as the voices and ministries of His will. Trust Him about every one and everything, for all times and all needs, earth and heaven, friends and children, the conquest of sin, the growth of holiness, the cross that chafes, the grace that stirs. - Anthony W. Thorold

Worship on Sunday is one thing, but it can be quite a different thing on Monday, especially if things are not going well. On Sundays we gather with other believers to sing, praise, pray and preach. The time together may be uplifting and encouraging. We walk out of the service remembering the words of the psalmist who said, "I rejoiced with those who said to me, 'Let us go to the house of the LORD'" (Ps. 122:1).
But life is not always lived in Sunday-morning experiences. Sometimes it is difficult, and worship seems like something far away, almost inappropriate for the circumstances. If this is true of you, then there is a problem with your understanding of worship, because we are to live lives of worship in the good times and the bad.
When things are going well, it is easy, even natural, to praise God. When things are going so-so, we may still worship, but it is another story to talk about worship on the heels of disaster. The praiseworthiness of God does not depend on our circumstances. Perhaps today you are struggling with difficulties or a mountain of problems. Whatever the circumstances, praise and worship God- not just today in church, but each and every day.
